In our new blog series “A wee chat with…” the SEC has quick fire Q&A with an organiser to get an insight into their working life and their event, plus getting their views on Glasgow and the venue.

Thousands gathered for the 4th SFN Expo at the SEC in October and we caught up Show Manager Neil Maclean for a wee chat.

What was your ‘lightbulb’ moment for creating SFN?

I was sat in my flat and had about 50 different business plans in front of me. I knew I wanted to run a business but wasn’t sure what. I’ve got a degree in sports science and I used to run some events, so when I put the two together then you get SFN!

What’s your favourite thing about running SFN??

When the doors open and everyone is in the event. 365 days of stress seem to take care of itself and there’s usually no hitches!

Describe SFN in one sentence…

The inspirational health and fitness event of the year.

How important is the content of your show?

Content is absolutely everything to the show. It’s been a huge learning curve, trying to describe the show when the content is so broad.

What’s been the biggest challenge in the show so far?

Running an event of this scale from scratch – when we started we had no external investment and therefore made personal losses. It’s been a battle to make it profitable but we’ve had such great support from QD Events and the SEC to get here.

Why did you get involved in the events industry?

I was studying international sales and marketing and I secured an internship with Artexis Easyfairs. They wanted to run a gaming show and I’m an avid gamer so, they offered me a job rather than an internship.

What’s your favourite restaurant/bar in Glasgow?

Pane Vino's.

Where do you see the future of SFN?

The end goal is to see halls 3,4 and 5 all open at the same time. A venue takeover!

Going forward, who’s the next big name you’d like to bring to the show?

Arnold Schwarzenegger

What are you up to after this year’s show?

Focusing on the rebooking for 2018! I don’t generally tend to get a break until a month or so after the show.

Describe Glasgow in two words...

Extremely fun.

What is the most important factor in creating a successful event?

Content over everything.

How much do you bench?

97.5kg – so close to those triple figures!
