The SSE Hydro Celebrates First Birthday in Style
The SSE Hydro will celebrate its first anniversary on September 30th 2014, one year after it opened its doors with music legend, Rod Stewart. The 12,000 seat arena will celebrate in style following a stunning 12 months of events.
Over the last year, the state-of-the-art venue has established itself as one of the best purpose-built live entertainment arenas in the world. In its first six months of operation The SSE Hydro attracted over 600,000 visitors and received several prestigious awards – including ranking 3rd in the Pollstar Global Arena results.
Now the venue welcomed 1.5 million visitors through its doors and has hosted over 147 events including Cirque Du Soleil and Dancing on ice, as well as many of the world’s top touring artists from Prince, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Michael Buble, Arctic Monkeys and Fleetwood Mac. Last month, the venue hosted six sports as part of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games which saw the SECC welcome over 200,000 visitors across 11 days.
Kathleen Warden, Director of Conference Sales at the SECC, commented: ‘It has been a fantastic first year for the SSE Hydro. We held our first international conference at the Hydro in August, with over 9,000 attendees which was an overwhelming success.’
The SSE Hydro has also kept Glasgow well-refreshed – selling 490,000 soft drinks, 380,000 pints of beer, 140,000 glasses of wine and 24,000 pizzas!
The venue will complete its birthday celebrations in style, by this week hosting the Ryder Cup Gala Dinner and Concert with an unforgettable evening of entertainment and food and drink to give a warm welcome as the eyes of the world once again turn to Scotland.
