Makenzie Brown named one of PCMA’s 20 in Their Twenties
We are delighted to share that Makenzie Brown, part of our International Associations Sales Team, has been selected for Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA)’s 20 in Their Twenties programme, a global initiative recognising emerging talent across the business events industry.
Finding her way into events
At 27, Makenzie has been with the Scottish Event Campus for just over 18 months, and her route into the industry was anything but planned.
With a degree in journalism and professional writing, and a background rooted in hospitality through her family, Makenzie found herself drawn to large-scale events almost by accident. A role in crew catering for film, TV and major sporting events introduced her to bidding for contracts, which sparked an interest that ultimately led her to the SEC.
“I didn’t even know this industry existed. I was always curious about the Scottish Event Campus and the Associations role piqued my interest, it felt close to my past experience. I came in open-minded and it’s turned out to be the perfect fit.”
Learning from experience
Working alongside long-established association specialists has played a key role in Makenzie’s development.
“I feel very lucky to be part of a team with so much experience. You can turn to Dawn (Lauder, Head of Association Sales), Steph (Beattie, Head of Corporate Sales) or Kathleen (Warden, Director of Conference Sales) and always get thoughtful advice and support. I definitely wouldn’t be in the position I am now without that.”
That enthusiasm has quickly taken hold, with Makenzie proudly describing herself as an “association lover” alongside her colleagues.
A global perspective, rooted in Glasgow
Born and bred in Glasgow, Makenzie speaks passionately about the city she represents internationally. She also brings valuable insight from spending four years studying at Michigan State University in the United States.
“That time in North America has really shaped how I work. It helps with communication, understanding how clients operate, and building genuine relationships beyond the business conversation.”
A year of standout moments
Asked to reflect on the past year, Makenzie finds it hard to single out just one success.
“Every win feels significant in its own way, regardless of size or value.”
One moment does stand out, however. Travelling to Arizona to present Glasgow and Scotland live on stage as part of a competitive UK bid against venues in Canada and Turkey was a defining experience.
“To be asked to bid in person like that is rare now, which made it feel even more special to win it.”
What the programme offers
PCMA’s 20 in Their Twenties programme brings together 20 early-career professionals from across the global events industry for a year of learning, mentoring and collaboration.
“For me, it is about building my network, learning from peers across different sectors, and helping to position both myself and the SEC on a global stage,” says Makenzie.
The year ahead includes volunteering at PCMA’s Convening Leaders conference, speaking to university students through PCMA U, shadowing board members, and attending regional PCMA conferences as a delegate.
“If I had known this was a career option when I was at university, I would have explored it much sooner. Being able to share real experiences with students now feels very rewarding.”
Dominic McKay, CEO of the SEC said: “Makenzie’s selection for PCMA’s 20 in Their Twenties reflects her exceptional contribution to our International Associations Sales team. Her enthusiasm, expertise and drive are a real asset to the SEC, and we look forward to seeing her continue to grow and represent our organisation on the international stage.”
Looking ahead
With international experience, a growing passion for associations, and a place on a global leadership programme, Makenzie’s career is gathering momentum.
We are proud to see her representing the SEC and Glasgow within the international associations community.
